Is there a place where you can enjoy total freedom, but not total isolation?

I want out for a while. If you've ever seen in nature, the movie made in the book, I'm being completely inspired by it now. My question is, is there a more secure, but as free and "wild" a place to escape confinement, no? He went to Alaska and be fully isolated. Only survive. I do not want to do that, but I want to be able to fish and hunt no law that stops me. I want to go to the Northwest states of America .. as Washington or Oregon. Somewhere hilly and beautiful. It is possible, but if you want to be in a national park, you probably can not sleep there. I also try to say up-north in Minnesota, is perfect for what its description.
