IOM or other charities?

I just saw an Oprah episode was about children working on fishing boats in Ghana and how an organization called the IOM is a place where you can help. Well, the website does not work, but has anyone had experience with IOM? I always want to help and give to organizations charity, but do not know what they really are worth donating too, ie I do not know what a good percentage for the actually used the money to give. I learned that even 5% is too much for them to make but I'm not sure. Are there any more organizations like the IOM that are trusted? Thanks
