At the Sign of the Beaver story why Attea suggest that mate to go fishing?

After the boy stole his gun Ben Matt needed food. For the protein in the woods without a gun the only thing I could do other than trapping are for food fish. The only reason Matt trusts in man (Ben) is because he is white, but the Indians are afraid to help. How's this for irony? Hope this helps.
