How can you tell how deep the water is when fishing in a pond, lake, or river?

I live in Fairborn Ohio, and there are plenty of fishermen and good spots to fish around here. I tried looking for topography maps but are unable to find any and every fisherman tells me different depths. This is my first year fishing and I love it. I go almost every other day if I can. Is there an inexpensive way to tell how deep the water is or what type of fish is in it???

if you want to, check this out, you can go to yahoo maps and set it to satellite. go to the areas you have found to fish and get the picture as close as you can. And after studying it you will want to go to new places maybe just fifty feet to one side or the other to try it. Sometimes the pictures get taken and you can actually see depths (points, sand bars, drop offs, deep water ) fairly clearly. You can always cast a plain weight out and count down in seconds to find the depth where you fish too. If there are waters to be fished usually there are tackle shops promoting it. You can go in all of them and ask about what fish are in your waters and they want you as a customer and the guy who willingly tells you the most and you find it's true (like where to fish for what and use this kinda help) well that's the guy you buy your bait from. Hey free is still free isn't it? I tell everyone you don't get nothing unless you ask for it. True, you might not get it, but if you don't ask, you will never know. That's why you are here though, right?
