Fishing for salmon/trout in Lake Michigan around the Chicago area?

I live in a Chicago suburb and I want to go to lake Michigan for some salmon and trout fishing. I would like to know where the best places are for shore fishing, (i have heard that montrose harbor was good but i am wondering if there any others) Also, are there and specific lures/ tactics when fishing for them. i have never gone salmon and trout fishing before, so the simplest details could help. Thanks

Most shore or pier salmon and trout fishing happens in the fall and spring. For the fall, minnow type lures, little cleo, live minnows, and spawn work for Steel Head.

Salmon will start around Labor Day. Trout move in and follow the shore as the water cools. Any beach (that allows fishing) near a river mouth would be a good choice.

Contact a local tackle shop (not Walmart or a large chain) they will have information and the colors that are effective in your area.
